Ralph Plath is a former journalist who now spends most of his time in a canoe when not teaching photography and video with the Algonquin College Journalism program in Ottawa since 2000.

His many media adventures include being a freelance photographer, part-owner and managing editor of an entertainment and sports newspaper, and working as a reporter, photographer and editor in communities such as Pembroke, Ontario, as well as Yellowknife and Fort Simpson in the North West Territories.

Over the past 35 years, he has traveled throughout Canada and further afield to Australia, Africa, Asia, Central America, and Europe, producing freelance travel stories and pictures for such publications as the Ottawa Citizen, Globe and Mail, Canoe and Kayak Magazine, Paddler Magazine, and Kanawa Magazine.

But ever since his first river adventure in 1992, his first love remains canoe tripping…
